Social Media Platform Features

Social media platform features are the tools built into every app, like a hashtag, a thread or a For You feed. This group of our social media glossary will explain what every one is called and what it does, so you can follow a help article or a guide without second guessing a menu name.

Social Media Platform Features in This Group

We are writing 79 entries. Some features exist on many apps, like hashtag, algorithm, alt text, DM and pinned post. Others belong to one app, like duet on TikTok or RT on X. A few are status terms people use about accounts, like blue checkmark and shadowban. When an entry is about one app, the app name sits at the top. We will group entries by what the feature does: posting, finding content, messaging and account status. Every entry will also link to the guides that use the feature.

Why Feature Names Keep Changing

One feature can carry a different name on every app. An app can rename its own feature later. Menus move too. Every entry will show the date we last checked it. Any change is logged on our change log. If a help article uses a name you do not know, search it before you hunt through menus. To check a name fast, look at three things on the entry: the app, the check date and the plain definition at the top. If the app or the date does not match what you see on your screen, email us and we will recheck it.

What is the Difference Between a Feature and a Setting?

A feature is a tool, like a pinned post. A setting is a switch you can change in the app. This group covers names and meanings. Steps and fixes sit in the platform sections of SMTwist, starting with Instagram. One example is our guide on how to hide likes on Instagram.

Not sure which kind of term you have? Ask one question. Can you switch it on or off in the app? If yes, it is a setting and a guide will help. If no, it is a name or a status and the glossary entry will explain it. A guide on a setting will link to the entry for every feature it mentions, so you can read the meaning without leaving your place.

FAQ

What are social media features?

They are the tools inside an app, like hashtags, threads, direct messages and pinned posts. Every one has a name, a purpose and sometimes a menu.

Why does one feature have different names?

Every app chooses its own words and can rename a feature later. The entry names the app, so you know which version you are reading about.

Where are the steps to change a setting?

Steps live in our how to guides. The glossary explains what a feature is and the guide shows how to use it.

Will every entry name the app?

Yes, when a feature belongs to one app or works differently on every app. A feature shared by every app will say so.
