X (Twitter) Guides for Creators and Brands

X (Twitter) guides for people who post and brands that advertise. What the app does first, then the guides.

X (Twitter) guides on Social Media Twist cover the short post app for two groups, namely people who post and brands that advertise. None is published yet. Twenty six are planned. Until then, this hub lists what X does, which ad tools X names and the user figures that have been reported. Every guide will be marked Tested or Checked, as our editorial policy explains.

What X (Twitter) Does

X (Twitter) launched as Twitter on 15 July 2006 and was rebranded to X on 23 July 2023, says Wikipedia. X Help describes a post as something that can contain photos, GIFs, videos, links and text. Its limits are below. Dated changes since the rebrand sit in our Twitter new features timeline. What X Help says on limited posts is in our shadow banned on Twitter topic.

Item What X Help says
Standard post Up to 280 characters
Longer post Up to 4,000 characters with X Premium plans
Media Up to 4 items in one post
Compose Select the post compose icon and then Post
X post limits: 280 characters, 4,000 with Premium, 4 media items

Tools for Brands

X Business lists five campaign objectives in Ads Manager. They are Reach, Video views, App installs, Engagement and Website conversions. Its advertising material names seven formats, among them Amplify video, image and carousel ads, promoted posts and dynamic product ads. X says there is no minimum budget and that advertisers are charged only when ads appear. The same source claims an average 10x return on ad spend. It gives no method or period for that claim, so we do not treat it as a fact. Creators have a payout route too, which our make money on Twitter topic covers.

Reported User Figures

X does not publish statistics on active accounts, says Wikipedia, so user counts vary. The figures below all count monthly active users. Wikipedia attributes every figure to Elon Musk and not to company filings. None is independently audited.

Date Monthly active users Source
March 2023 500 million Musk, via Wikipedia
March 2024 550 million Musk, via Wikipedia
May 2024 600 million Musk, via Wikipedia
Three X monthly user figures from March 2023 to May 2024 attributed to Elon Musk

We found no newer figure from X itself. A daily figure counts something else and is not set beside these.

Where Our X Guides Stand

X changes its menus and plans without notice, so a guide here shows when it was last checked. A guide is Tested when Namrata Arora tried the steps on a real account and Checked when it was compared with official help only. Changes are logged on our change log. To find an X term, use the SMTwist search or the social media glossary. If you have tested an X feature yourself, you can pitch it through Write for Us.
