Social Media Slang, Acronyms and Emojis
Social media slang is the set of words, short forms and emojis people use in comments, captions and messages. This group of our social media glossary will explain every term in plain English, so you can read a thread without guessing and write a caption that sounds like you.
Social Media Slang in This Group
We are writing 264 entries in three kinds. They are words, short forms and emojis. Most are not tied to one app. The first entry, Algospeak, is live. The next ones are AMA, Ate, Banger, Lowkey, Mid, Ratio, ICYMI, IYKYK and PFP. The order can change as we check every term. Short forms save typing, yet the same letters can stand for different phrases in different chats. Every short form entry will spell out the full phrase and say where it is used.
How Every Slang Entry will be Written
Every entry will give the meaning first, then an example sentence, the app where the term is used most and the date we last checked it. Slang shifts quickly, so a change to an entry is logged on our change log.
Using Slang in Your Own Posts
Use a word only if your audience already uses it. A term that fits a creator talking to friends can sound forced in a brand post. When you are unsure, wait until the word shows up in your own comments and replies before you put it in a caption. A word that is new to you can already be old to your audience.

Does slang mean the same on every app?
Not always. Our entries name the app whenever a meaning differs from one app to another.
