Instagram Threads Timeline, Follower Growth and Ads Explained
Instagram Threads is the common name for Threads, a text based social app from Meta that is linked to Instagram accounts. This topic puts the dated facts in one place, including what it is, when features and rules changed, how followers grow and how ads work. No guide in this topic is published yet. Three are planned. They cover Instagram Threads, how to get followers on Threads and a Threads strategy explainer. The facts below come from Wikipedia, TechCrunch, BGR, Tom's Guide, GIGAZINE, Buffer and Straight North. We have not tested these settings or tactics in the app ourselves.
Instagram Threads: What It Is
Wikipedia says Threads launched on 5 July 2023 and is owned by Meta Platforms. It works on Android and iOS. A web version followed on 22 August 2023. Posts can hold up to 500 characters of text. The European Union launch came on 14 December 2023, after a delay of about five months over privacy concerns. Wikipedia names two worries. One is the data Threads collects and the other is how tightly it is tied to Instagram accounts.
Instagram Threads Timeline
Every row comes from the source in the last column. Dates matter here because the app changes without notice.
| Date | What happened | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 5 Jul 2023 | Launch in about 100 countries | Wikipedia |
| 14 Nov 2023 | Delete a Threads profile on its own, announced by Adam Mosseri | BGR |
| 14 Dec 2023 | Launch in the European Union | Wikipedia |
| 21 Mar 2024 | Beta that links public accounts to the fediverse | Wikipedia |
| Jul 2025 | Direct messages added | Wikipedia |
| 22 Oct 2025 | Communities launched | Wikipedia |
| Early 2026 | Ads begin to roll out | Wikipedia |
| Jun 2026 | 500 million monthly active users announced by Mosseri | GIGAZINE |

Audience figures grew in steps. TechCrunch reported over 130 million monthly users in February 2024. Wikipedia gives over 400 million in August 2025. Every figure counts monthly users, so they can be compared with one another. A daily figure is a different count and should not be set beside them.
Instagram Threads Policy and Privacy
Three account and privacy points come up in the sources:
- Deleting a profile. Tom's Guide, in July 2023, quoted the Threads privacy policy. A profile could only be deleted by deleting the Instagram account. In November 2023 BGR reported the change. Mosseri wrote that a way to delete a Threads profile separately was rolling out.
- Posts shown elsewhere. BGR says Mosseri also announced an opt out under Settings and then Privacy. It stops Threads posts from being featured on Facebook and Instagram.
- Messages. Wikipedia says direct messages launched without end to end encryption and drew criticism for it.
Wikipedia also reports that Turkey shut Threads down from 29 April 2024 over rulings on data sharing with Instagram. It says the app returned on 17 June 2026.
How to Get Followers on Threads
Wikipedia says people can choose which Instagram follows carry over to Threads. In December 2024 the Threads connection to the fediverse let Threads users follow fediverse accounts and the other way round. Buffer lists ten tactics in an article dated 10 February 2026. Its figures come from Buffer's own data. The advice is not ours.
| Tactic | What Buffer says |
|---|---|
| Tell your followers | Add the Threads badge to your Instagram bio and share a link to your profile on other channels |
| Choose a niche | Stay on one topic or a tight group of topics |
| Join conversations | Reply on your own posts. Buffer's study of 128,000 posts found this can raise engagement by 42% per post |
| Post regularly | 1 a day is the minimum and 2 to 3 a day gives steady growth. 3 or more gives faster growth |
| Choose a time | An analysis of more than 2.5 million posts found weekday mornings from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. tend to perform well. Thursday at 9 a.m. is its strongest weekday slot |
| Limit promotion | Pin promotional posts to your profile so they stay visible without filling your feed |
Buffer also says timing can help a solid post but cannot rescue a weak one. Several of its examples are single accounts reporting their own results, not measured data.
Threads Ads and Strategy
A Threads strategy has an organic side and a paid side. Buffer covers the organic side in the tactics above. Straight North, in a guide from January 2026 that it modified in June 2026, covers the paid side. It says ads go out through Meta's Ads Manager and appear natively in feeds. Formats support text, images and video. Targeting is custom, lookalike and interest based.
Wikipedia dates the start of the ads roll out to early 2026. Our Straight North source does not say in which countries ads appear.
What is Still Unconfirmed
GIGAZINE gives no detail on how the 500 million figure is measured. The sources do not agree on what Threads allowed in 2023 and later, so check the Account section in your own app. We read Wikipedia for most dates and could not read Meta's own help articles in full. The Turkey dates come from Wikipedia alone. We have not confirmed any of Buffer's tactics on a live Threads account. Buffer sells a scheduling tool, so check its advice against your own Threads Insights. Meta stopped publishing Threads user numbers after July 2023 according to Wikipedia, so later figures come from company posts and third parties.

FAQ
Is Threads the same as Instagram?
No. Threads is a separate app owned by Meta. Its accounts are tied to Instagram accounts and by default they share a username, a profile picture and a display name, according to Wikipedia.
Can you delete Threads without deleting Instagram?
Sources from different dates disagree. Tom's Guide said in July 2023 that only deactivation was possible. BGR reported on 14 November 2023 that Adam Mosseri announced a way to delete a Threads profile separately. Look at the Account section in the app to see what it includes now.
How many times a day should you post on Threads to gain followers?
Buffer suggests at least 1 post a day as a minimum and 2 to 3 a day for steady growth. It suggests 3 or more a day for faster growth. It says replies count toward that total. This is Buffer's advice and we have not tested it.
How do ads work on Threads?
Straight North reports that ads go out through Meta's Ads Manager and appear natively in feeds. It lists text, image and video formats. It does not say in which countries ads appear.
