What X Help Says About Reduced Reach, Labels and Video Pauses

Shadow banned on Twitter is a phrase for a user whose posts are hidden without any notice. This topic gathers what X Help and Wikipedia say about it, plus what X Help says on videos that pause. No guide in this topic is published yet. Two are planned. They cover one on shadow bans and one on a Twitter video that keeps pausing. We have not tried either problem on an account ourselves.

Shadow Banned on Twitter: What the Term Means

Wikipedia defines a shadow ban as blocking or partly blocking a user or their content in a way the user cannot readily see. The term began with fake account suspensions on web forums. By 2022 it also covered delisting and downranking. The X Help articles on enforcement options and enforcement philosophy do not contain the word shadow. The dates below mix X's articles with reports.

Date What happened Source
Jul 2018 Twitter disputes a shadow ban report Wikipedia
8 Dec 2022 Twitter Files describe visibility filtering Wikipedia
Apr 2023 Labels on limited posts begin X Help
26 Sep 2023 X tests an account level alert Social Media Today
Four dated reports about shadow bans on Twitter from 2018 to 2023

In 2018 Twitter said it did not shadow ban under the old, narrow and classical definition, per Wikipedia. The Twitter Files thread named tools like a Do not amplify tag. Wikipedia attributes that thread to journalists using documents shared by Elon Musk. We read no X reply to it.

What X Help Lists as Visibility Limits

X Help describes enforcement options for posts that break its rules. The wording below is paraphrased.

Option What X Help says
Limited visibility Post leaves search, trends and timelines
Label Authors and viewers see the limit
Read only mode Account cannot post or Like for a time
Lock A phone or email check can be required
Four enforcement options X Help lists: limited visibility, label, read-only mode and lock

Limited visibility can also mean a post is shown only on the author's profile or ranked lower in replies. X can restrict Likes, Reposts and bookmarks too. In read only mode a user can still read timelines and can message only followers. It describes these as responses to violations. It does not describe a hidden penalty for ordinary posts.

How to Check if You are Shadow Banned on Twitter

No checker is described. The one signal X Help names is a label. The steps below are paraphrased from its enforcement article and were not tried on an account.

  1. Look for a label Labels tell authors that a post's visibility was limited.
  2. Appeal the label Authors who think the limit is wrong can submit an appeal.
  3. Use the form for removals A post removal request has its own appeals form.

Social Media Today reported on 26 September 2023 that X was testing a notification about possible reach restrictions on an account that can carry sensitive media. The example text was said to be subject to change. We found no X source that confirms the alert reached all users.

Why Twitter Videos Keep Pausing

No X Help article explains a video that pauses or stalls. Its video article covers autoplay and live video. Autoplay settings sit in the accessibility menu under Settings and privacy, then Data usage. Every device has its own choices:

  • iOS app: Video autoplay with On cellular or Wi-Fi, Only on Wi-Fi or Never
  • Android app: Video autoplay with Mobile data and Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi only or Never
  • Web: Autoplay with On cellular or Wi-Fi or Never

The web and the app keep separate settings. For live video the article advises a strong network, a different network or browser and a restart of the app or browser. It also says an up to date version is advised. Disabled third party cookies can stop Premium live streaming and the embedded live widget from working.

X lists MP4 or MOV files with H.264 video and AAC audio in its ad specifications. That article covers ads only, so we do not treat it as a rule for ordinary posts.

What is Still Unconfirmed

Neither a shadow ban nor a tool to detect one is named in any X source we read. The Social Media Today report dates from 2023 and describes a test. Wikipedia's account of the Twitter Files is reporting that we did not check against the original documents. The video article carries no date and gives no cause for pausing. We have not reproduced either problem, so nothing here is Tested. Check every setting in your own app before you rely on a step.

FAQ

Does X shadow ban accounts?

The X Help articles we read never use the term. They list ways X limits a post, like removing it from search and from the For you timeline. Posts limited this way get a label that authors can appeal.

Can I check if my account is limited?

X Help describes no checking tool. It says labels tell authors and viewers when a post's visibility was limited. We tested no third party checker, so none is named here.

Why does a video keep pausing on X?

No X Help article gives a cause. Its video article covers autoplay settings and, for live video, a strong connection and an up to date app. Everything else it sends to the Help Center forms.
