Social Shops: Shopify Channels, Setup and Checkout Changes

Social selling is a term with two meanings. LinkedIn uses it for how a salesperson uses social media to win business. Other sources use it for selling products through shops inside social apps. This topic gathers what LinkedIn and Shopify Help say about both. No guide in this topic is published yet. Nine are planned, from what the term means to selling luxury goods and a product launch checklist. We have not set up a social shop ourselves.

Social Selling Meaning

LinkedIn created the Social Selling Index to measure how effectively a salesperson uses social media for social selling. The score ranges from 0 to 100. LinkedIn describes four areas it covers. They are building a professional brand, finding prospects, engaging with them and building relationships on LinkedIn. The same article says the score no longer accurately reflects the modern sales environment and presents the index as moving toward AI powered tools. It shows no publish date beyond a 2025 copyright line.

Shopify frames selling differently. Its definition is the use of social platforms to promote and sell products. Our Social Commerce hub sets the two definitions side by side.

Shopify Channels for Social Shops

Shopify Help lists three social commerce channels. Details come from its channel articles, which carry no dates.

Channel What Shopify Help says
Facebook and Instagram Sync products to shops and tag them in posts and stories
TikTok Shop Sell through shoppable videos and live streams
Roblox Sell branded merchandise inside a game
Three Shopify social commerce channels: Facebook and Instagram, TikTok Shop and Roblox

For TikTok Shopify Help says to install the TikTok sales channel from the Shopify App Store. Customers buy on TikTok and you fulfill the order from Shopify admin.

Facebook and Instagram Setup Steps

The order below is paraphrased from Shopify Help and was not tried on an account.

  1. Open sales channels In Shopify admin go to Settings and then Sales channels.
  2. Add the channel Search the Shopify App Store for Facebook and add it.
  3. Connect accounts Sign in to Facebook and link the assets you need.
  4. Finish setup Accept the terms and finish.

Four conditions apply. Shopify needs a Facebook business profile and a business portfolio that owns it. An Instagram professional account must meet Meta's commerce eligibility rules. The Commerce Manager name must match your public business name and avoid the words facebook, ig and meta. Your myshopify.com domain cannot sit in another business portfolio.

Checkout and Tax Changes

Shopify Help says customers are redirected to your online store to complete a purchase. As of 26 August 2025 you are responsible for collecting taxes on orders from this channel. Meta is no longer a marketplace tax facilitator for new orders. Check your tax settings before you finish setup.

What is Still Unconfirmed

The Shopify article does not list eligible countries. It points to a separate Meta list we have not checked. We read no social selling statistics. WhatsApp's own articles were blocked to our tools, so nothing about conversational commerce appears here. We also read nothing yet on luxury goods, launch checklists or shopping trends. Rules and tools change, so confirm every step in your own account.

FAQ

What is social selling?

LinkedIn uses the term for how a salesperson uses social media to build a professional brand, find prospects, engage with them and build relationships. It built a 0 to 100 score to measure that. Other sources use it for selling products inside social apps.

Is social selling the same as social commerce?

The sources we read use the words differently. LinkedIn ties social selling to salespeople and relationships. Shopify defines social commerce as using social platforms to promote and sell products. Read which meaning a source uses before you compare advice.

Can customers check out inside Instagram?

Not through the Shopify channel, according to Shopify Help. It says customers are redirected to your online store to complete their purchase. Meta no longer handles checkout there for new orders.
